2023 Inductee Pat Dooris

For outstanding journalism and service across more than three decades at KGW for the viewers of Oregon and Southwest Washington. Thanks for setting the standard for always getting the story right!

Pat Dooris is an award-winning reporter and anchor who has spent most of his career at KGW in Portland, Oregon.

A graduate of Washington State University in 1985, Dooris landed his first job at KCWT in Wenatchee (which no longer does local news). From there he moved to KEVN in Rapid City, SD; then to KNDO in Yakima, WA; WFRV in Green Bay WI; and, finally, to KGW in Portland in 1990.

Some of his biggest stories include a series in Green Bay that brought forward new information in a years-long unsolved murder case, leading to the arrest and conviction of the killer. He also spent nearly a month in the Persian Gulf as an embedded reporter on the USS Abraham Lincoln during the Gulf War. His brother, Bill, led an F-18 fighter squadron on the ship at that time, and they were the only broadcasting/fighter pilot brother combo among U.S. armed forces.

Dooris also broadcast live from KGW’s helicopter as a rescue chopper crashed and rolled down the side of Mount Hood in 2002. His coverage and on-air reaction was carried by stations around the world. More recently, Dooris won Emmy and Murrow awards for his in-depth reporting from inside the ICU of St. Charles Hospital in Bend, Oregon during the Covid crisis.

He lives in Portland with his wife, two college-aged sons and two cats. In his spare time, Dooris competes in triathlons, completed his first full Ironman in 2021 and has finished several half-Ironman competitions.
