Greg Thies

Greg Thies is the News/Sports Production Manager for KING5 in Seattle and is honored to serve as the President for the Northwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

With over 43 years in the industry, Greg has managed high-caliber, award-winning staffs of photojournalists, video editors, directors and engineers. He has coordinated logistics and operations at many major local, national and international events, including 14 Olympic games over 3 decades, managed corporate news operations/logistics and coverage of large-scale news stories including hurricanes, earthquakes and wildfires, and often handles TV pool coordination responsibilities for local/regional events and memorials. In addition to his role at KING-5, Greg is the Chief sUAS Safety Officer and corporate drone program trainer for KING5’s parent company TEGNA, helping oversee the UAS operations at 42 TV stations and more than 150 pilots.

Greg has received a number of regional and national awards as a production manager and as a photojournalist including national Peabody and Scripps-Howard awards and 5 regional Emmys. He is also active in other local community and professional organizations, serving on a school district career and technical education advisory group and with the Society of Broadcast Engineers, as one of the NW region's BAS frequency coordinators. Greg spent the first part of his career at Sea World and KCST (now KNSD) in San Diego, then later at KIRO-TV for 15 years as a photojournalist & editor and news operations manager, and for the last 24 years at KING-TV. Greg is an USSF Soccer referee for both youth and high school matches and was a long-time leader with Scouts BSA.
