The other day, your NATAS board was having its monthly meeting at 333 Dexter Ave., and I was happy to announce to the board that we had a record number of Emmy entries from our region — 850 entries in the nearly 70 categories the Northwest offers. That 850 number might not sound so big to you, but when you consider we beat last year’s total by 200, and last year was a very good year, then you begin to understand why everyone in that board room was so thrilled. Yes, it’s been more work for our NATAS Administrator, Diane Bevins. After all, Diane and her hard working staff have to process all those entries. But it’s the kind of work Diane lives for. With so many entries, the competition this year is as fierce as it’s ever been. I wish everyone the best of luck. Some dates to put into your calendar: nominations come out April 18th at our Emmy All Stars event at the Experience Music Project. I’m happy to announce we’ll be ‘upgraded’ to the Sky Church at the EMP. It’s a dream venue. I’m sure the eight bands performing that night will agree. Looking ahead to June 7th, the Emmy Awards ceremony hosted by Pat Cashman and produced by Chris Cashman, should be one of our best ever. What a team we have in place! We want this year’s event to be extra special as we celebrate a milestone, NATAS Northwest’s 45th year. Last year, we did something we’d never done: we streamed the Emmy Awards ceremony, so people could see it live and ‘on demand’ afterwards. General Manager and fellow board member Ross Davis from Seattle Community Colleges Television made that happen. I can promise you we’ll do it again. That decision isn’t Ross’ anymore. He’s retiring from SCCtv at the end of February, and I will be taking over as GM. I have some very big shoes to fill and can’t wait to get started on yet another chapter in my post-KOMO career. See you April 18th at the EMP! John Sharify President, NATAS NW CHAPTER |
