Peter Morrill’s career in television can be described in two words: quality and integrity. Throughout his more than 30-year career, he has always maintained the highest standards and stood behind the people with whom he works. He is a leader within the PBS system, nationally recognized for his dedication to the mission of public broadcasting. His peers in Idaho turn to him to lead efforts that impact broadcasters statewide. He is an honest and caring general manager, someone who worked his way to the top and never hesitates to take on any task. Under his stewardship, Idaho Public Television creates national award-winning television productions, leads the region in technical achievement, and maintains a commitment to provide Idahoans with outstanding broadcasting services. Peter’s dedication to the ideals of public broadcasting were challenged in September 2000 when the station aired the documentary “It’s Elementary,” which addressed methods educators can use in the classroom to promote tolerance and issues surrounding discrimination of homosexuals. This nationally distributed documentary was produced out of Chicago and aired on PBS stations across most of the nation. But the decision to air it in Idaho created a firestorm. Legislators decried even the mention of the topic and discussed eliminating Idaho Public Television as a state entity. Peter courageously and graciously stood up for the critical need for Public Television to present all ideas and to allow the public to learn and decide on issues for themselves. Peter also believes in the education of television professionals and serves on the board of the University of Idaho School of Journalism and Mass Media. He is active in the community, having served as a member of the Ada County Planning and Zoning Commission and on Anser Charter School’s board of directors. Peter W. Morrill has made a tremendous difference to the quality of television in Idaho, in the PBS system as a whole, and in the lives of his staff. |
